'No. 009 - Sunny Side Up'

The Matilija Poppy doesn't bloom by accident. Delicate in its needs yet magnificent in its reward, it thrives only when given the right conditions such as care, patience, and a place where it belongs.

For a brief moment each summer, its bloom transforms effort into beauty, drawing life and attention from all around. Its lesson is simple: we cultivate not because flourishing is guaranteed, but because growth is always possible. The bloom may be fleeting, yet it stands as a reminder that beauty often emerges from quiet commitment. That reminds us that renewal itself is equal to the belief that growth was even possible in the first place.

Ross Damman - 'No. 009 - Sunny Side Up'

Born and raised in a rural farm community in Ohio, Ross Damman is a Los Angeles based shoe designer and visual artist whose work is focused on connection and reverence to the natural world.  Growing up as an avid angler & birder, Ross was always seeking moments of magic in his natural surroundings.  Love and respect of these precious resources is what compels his artistic approach today.

Working in oil and digital illustration, Ross depicts these fleeting moments, with a rich approach to color, texture and light.  Ross’s scenes range from innocent sketches of his pup’s jovial gallop, serene landscapes often highlighted by a river, to epic vignettes of “once and a lifetime” brown trout caught on the fly.

Outside of his passion for the visual arts, Ross is also a bonsai enthusiast and gardener.  He uses the craft of Bonsai to connect the natural and composed worlds, finding joy and peace through the thoughtful creation of composition and the ritual of caretaking.  The stewardship to his trees and garden are symbolic of the way he approaches his engagement and responsibility to our natural world.

The Origin of Dear Nostalgia Project

After nearly 30 years of receiving hand-written postcards from our grandmother every month, we realized a tradition that we needed to pay forward. We're working with local artists each month to create new, exclusive designs and a unique experience of discovery for our writer community. We're also including an extra stamp with each card to spread gratitude in our own way. We're aiming to nourish human connection and sustain personal touch. For the price of a coffee each month, you can provide something technology cannot match.

Welcome to Dear Nostalgia Project.
